  • Alstom has a Modernisation workshop at Widnes and a Bogie revamp facility at Crewe.
  • CAF has a Train care centre at Chester.
  • Hitachi has a Manufacturing facility at Newton Aycliffe and a Office/Lab at Cheadle.

April 2025 Article Synopsis: Why are closures of Northern wealth creating industries so readily accepted?

From Meccano (Liverpool) in 1979 to the threat of closure of Scunthorpe Steelworks 2025 and every industry in-between.
It’s not that the products are no longer in demand. The Meccano iconic worldwide brand is still made & readily available, Steel produced using ‘Coke Blast Furnaces’ is still in high demand (1.9 billion tonnes per year made worldwide 2024, Scunthorpe produced 4 million tonnes in the same year).
Foreign ownership certainly makes relocation easier, but that hasn’t stopped many industries both Northern & foreign owned moving abroad siting cost reasons.
Is the problem due to British Government policies, ideologies and attitudes since 1946?
Is it due to the Unions and workers attitudes?
The complete abandonment of Coal & its bi product Methane Gas as the primary source of Energy for Industry (without a viable alternative in place i.e. no new or replacement Nuclear power plants have been brought online) has also added to the spiralling cost of production and caused unnecessary increases to the cost of living for Northerners.
We need to stop the destruction of the Northern economy, by working together and having the confidence that we can stop the decline ourselves.
