Background
The idea for the formation of a Northern Alliance Party was first discussed in 2018 at a meeting of the Yorkshire, North East & Cumbria First Parties.
Over the course of several meetings the following Core Policy was agreed in principle but not formally ratified by the Yorkshire or Cumbria First.
Core Policy.
The Northern Alliance seeks democratic and economic fairness for the North within a renewed United Kingdom.
The Northern Alliance recognises that the North of England - the North East, North West (including Cumbria), Yorkshire and The Humber - is a place of extraordinary diversity, culture and qualities which urgently requires effective regional democratic powers and a fairer share of national resources.
We advocate for the same level of devolution, and the same distribution of the country’s resources, as currently enjoyed by the people of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
Our aim is to fully develop the potential of the North and all its fifteen million people, ensuring that all Northern resources are developed, economically, affordably, and sustainably to meet the needs of the North not only for this generation but future generations.
The Northern Alliance is built around this core vision and welcomes the mutual support of all Northern political parties which share these goals. While our focus is on the North, we are also keen to build links with parties in the other regions of England, to pursue together a modern, equitable, federal United Kingdom & Northern Ireland.
Post Core Policy Agreement
Northern Parties Alliance (NPA)
Following the agreement the Northern Parties Alliance was formed with the intention of supporting Northern Parties under a Membership Scheme. Three Parties joined initially.
North East Party, Leigh & Atherton Independents, Putting Crewe First.
Although at first the Membership Scheme was successful, it became apparent that it was not best practice for Registered Political Parties to become formal Members of a Single Political Alliance, due to potential conflicts of Interest.
In 2022 the NPA was effectively shelved.
What was learned from the NPA was that mutual support worked within a formally structured organisation.
Northern Alliance Party: NAP
In 2024 the idea of the Northern Alliance Party was resurrected for the following reasons:
a) To support existing Northern Parties with similar aims, thereby increasing their share of the vote at National & Local Elections.
b) To attract & support Election Candidates across the North.
c) To ensure that all Northern’s can vote for a Northern Party in all Elections.
d) To create an environment where Voters habitually vote for Northern Parties as a first choice.
We hope that in the near future an Alliance of existing Registered Northern Political Parties will complete the Registration of the Northern Alliance Party with the Electoral Commission.
